As I have grown older there are a few things I have come to appreciate more and more; craftsmanship and keepsakes. As a child I remember watching my grandfather fell a tree, so that he could mill the wood, and then use it to craft every piece of furniture you could think of. Today, my house is filled with those tokens of his love and hard work, everything from rocking chairs to shelves, tables, even a lap and candlestick. It's not just the beauty and the quality that I appreciate, but it's the knowing that though there will come a day when he is no longer on the earth with me, I will always have reminders of times with him, memories sealed in the furniture that he made, that I will one day pass to my own kids. There are many things in our home that will come and go but I try to invest as much as I can in products that will not only last a lifetime but will carry significance long after I'm gone. My youngest son, Levi was very much in desperate need of a toy box and when I found the Wooden Toy Box I instantly fell in love with what I saw. Wooden Toy Box sent me the personalized toy box, pictured above, at no cost to facilitate this review. If you have a child that could use a toy box, a hope chest, or even a gorgeous box to keep their pillows and blankets in, the Wooden Toy Box is the perfect way to house your child's special belongings and give them a special keepsake to treasure for years to come.
Un-Boxing Our Wooden Toy Box
To say that Levi was waiting with anticipation for his Wooden Toy Box to arrive would be an understatement. Every day, without fail, he would watch for our FedEx truck to come and go until the day came where his toy box arrived. Boy was he excited! Immediately, and as expected, the first thing I noticed about this toy box is that it is 100% made of wood - no particle board here! Handcrafted wood furniture is not so easy found these days but it is one of the features I always look for in furniture. The second thing I noticed was the delicious smell of cedar! My Mom had a cedar chest growing up that she kept extra blankets in that immediately that smell and the memories of my favorite blankets came rushing back. Thirdly, the boards were dated, as you can see in the picture above, making this keepsake truly special. It will be fun for Levi years in the future to be able to look back and see exactly when his box was created.
Putting The Toy Box Together
Levi didn't want to wait for his dad to get home, so he and I set off to put his toy box together ourselves, which turned out to be a fairly simple job! I had just finished an entire weekend of putting together furniture that I had ordered off Amazon and so I was fully prepared to buckle down and get it done. I found that along with the quality of the craftsmanship, the people at Wooden Toy Box had already done some of the building work for me! This toy box is still the easiest piece of furniture I have ever put together. We started by reading the instructions (which were easy to understand and came complete with pictures of each step) front to back and then put the cams. Wooden Toy Box had already put the cam screws in place in the frame and in a snap, we had three sides put together.
Wooden Toy Box lets you choose what kind of base you would like for your toy box and because I have a fondness of the cedar smell, and because I know cedar is a sturdy wood, I chose that feature for Levi's toy box. Putting in the base was a snap (literally) as the board planks were already pre-cut to snap perfectly in place. After securing the 4th side and making sure all of the cam screws were locked in place, it was time to attach the lid. I started in on the hinges but quickly realized this portion was a job that needed a little more muscle power that I had on my own. Levi and I relented and waiting for Ben to get home. Ben make quick work of getting the hinges attached to the lid and securing it to the toy box. We used the suggestion of the instructions by putting the toy box on it's side and elevating the lid with a couple sturdy books. The secondary hinges on this toy box (the ones you see in the middle) are a mothers dream as they keep fingers from being pinched. The lid stays in place when opening or closing no matter how high or low your child may lift it. These hinges are a must when putting the toy box together and one of my favorite features of the Wooden Toy Box
Before & After
Quality, Classic Keepsake
Along with my grandfather, who instilled in me an admiration for quality craftsmanship, and wooden furniture, my husband owns his own flooring company and so the trades have become a part of my livelihood. My husband knows wood and knows quality. Ben gave his stamp of approval on this toy box without hesitation! The ability to personalize any of the Wooden Toy Boxes makes this one extra special for Levi. Being one of four kids, he's pretty excited to have something with his name on it. As the years move forward, this toy box will be a valuable heirloom whenever he wants to hand it down to one of his kids or grandchildren even. I know how much I would adore anything with my grandfather's name on it and I'm excited for Levi, that one day he will get to share this with generations still to come.
