Bring The World To Your Door With Novica

Novica Collage
Having been out of the United States a few times in my life, I can tell you I never truly understood all of the world's beauty until I saw it with my own eyes. I often miss the mountains of Honduras and the beauty of the people in Mexico and I was thrilled when I discovered Novica, who sent me the item pictured below at no cost to facilitate this review.  Now I can bring products, created by artists all over the world, into my own home and enjoy just a touch of the artistry and breathtaking charm so many countries in our world have to offer.

I'm not exaggerating when I say it took me days to decide just which beautiful piece I wanted to bring home. Novica lets you search for items in a variety of ways (by price, color, country, ect.). My husband and his family are of Mexican heritage so I decided it would be a great way to honor him and my children by having a little piece of their family history. When I saw the Aluminum "Princely" Tray, I just had to have it. Pictures just don't do justice to the grandeur of this serving tray and with it being made sole from aluminum, this tray would compliment any place setting.

It was the coolest feeling to open up my Novica box and hold in my hands literally a piece of Mexican artistry, that not long ago, was held in the hands of Luis Martinez Gallardo, a Mexican artist who creates beautiful pieces from aluminum found in his country.

"Hello, my name is Luis Martinez and in 1999 I started crafting aluminum products in my own workhshop. Since I began this project I have tried to infuse my products with a spark of Mexican style and ingenuity, while exploiting the beauty and strength of aluminum.

"First a model is made from acrylic, wood, or whatever other strong material, and a mold of it is made from sand. The first piece is cast from aluminum and, from this original, we make a sand mold for each piece. These molds have to be made very carefully so that we obtain only the best quality. Handmade products are never exactly the same in size or color, but we try our absolute best to make them the same size. The sand has to be solidly compacted so that the piece will have the best result and finish.

"The mold is cleaned and some holes are left in the surface to pour in liquid aluminum. During this process the aluminum should be melted at a certain temperature. Once the aluminum has been in the model for ten to fifteen minutes the piece is then ready, and the mold is broken to take it out. After this, the piece needs to smoothed and polished to give it the brilliant characteristics of pewter. Each piece is made from a new sand mold made from the aluminum master copy, and this makes each piece individual and unique." - Luis Martinez Gallardo

You can see on the bottom of this tray the small dimples and "imperfections" which actually add to the authentic display this tray presents. I love having something I know didn't just come off of a production line, but was made with heart, passion, and someone's own two very talented hands.

I loved all of the intricate detail he put into the handles of this serving tray and because each one is hand made, each serving tray is uniquely different. I have never owned any serving dishes made from aluminum, but I was amazed by the shine Luis was able to bring out of this material. I've already used this tray several times to serve rolls, roasted potatoes, and desserts and it cleans up easily and smoothly every time!
